DEAR SUN SPOTS: Regarding the June 14 Sun Spots, in your response to the question about the monuments at the Veterans Memorial Park in Lewiston, unfortunately Norm Cote passed away recently, and I do not know who took over for him as treasurer for the L&A Veterans Council. — Connie, Lewiston

ANSWER: I am so sorry to hear that. I did not know and wish to send my condolences to Norm’s family. He was a wonderful, helpful person. Thank you, kind reader Connie for bringing this to my attention.

I called the organization’s chairperson, Jerry Dewitt, and he let me know that Brandon Pelletier is the new treasurer of the council. He can be reached at 713-5589. If you have questions about sending in a new application and the accompanying fee, Brandon is the one to call. If you want to check on an application you have already sent in or have a question about names already on the monuments, call Jerry at 576-0376.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: This morning when my husband and I were about to cross East Avenue in front of Lewiston High School, a kind woman out for her morning run stopped and asked whether we were actually going to try and cross East Avenue.  We said we thought we’d wait as long as it took for the busy traffic to slow down from both directions. She immediately ran into the middle of the street and put up her hands, as crossing guards do, and stopped the traffic coming from both directions. We are hardly spring chickens, and my husband walks with a cane. This woman was clearly concerned for our safety and actually risked her own safety to help us cross. We are most grateful for this generous act of kindness. — Sheila, no town

ANSWER: That is one awesome woman right there, and I’m so glad she was on hand to help you. I do hope you will continue to be safe. To all walkers and joggers, I want to add one more thing while I have the chance: always be paying attention to your surroundings. I see far too many people walking along the side of the street/roadways looking down at their phones.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I just had to write! Kudos to the folks in Lewiston, Auburn, Mechanic Falls, Poland, the Sabbathday Lake area and Norway for their awesome Little Free Libraries. My grandchildren are home-schooled and during our afternoons we have traveled around doing Maine geography and library science. They get a book, leave a book, and have their picture taken at each place. They have loved it. Thanks again to all those who participate. Great job! — Barbara, Poland

ANSWER: Little Free Libraries are just wonderful! I’m a big fan myself and love to stop to check them out. For more information, there’s a website (littlefreelibrary.org) that includes locations of every Little Free Library in the world, as well as instructions on how to build and steward one yourself. The site also includes how to order discounted materials and books for your library. You’ll find out everything you need to know to share books and engage with your community.
