GOLF

Lizette Salas relied on precision and big putts to make up for a big power gap against Nelly Korda, and they wound up tied for the lead going into the final round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in Johns Creek, Georgia.

Salas shot her third straight 5-under 67, while Korda carded a 68.

They were at 15-under 201, five shots clear of a trio that includes Patty Tavatanakit (65), the Thai star who won the first LPGA major of the year at the ANA Inspiration.

PGA: Three-time Travelers Championship winner Bubba Watson picked up three strokes on Kramer Hickok over the final two holes, shooting a 2-under 68 to pull into a tie for the lead at 10-under par in Cromwell, Connecticut.

Hickock, who has never won on the PGA Tour, was 12 under – two strokes ahead of Jason Day and three in front of Watson – heading to the 17th before flying the green and missing a 10-foot par putt. He three-putted from 8 feet on No. 18 to finish with a 68 and fall back into a tie.

Day, Cameron Smith and Russell Henley are one shot behind.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Steve Stricker struggled on the back nine after opening an eight-shot lead but still has a four-stroke advantage going into final round of the Bridgestone Seniors Players Championship in Akron, Ohio.

Stricker three-putted the 10th, took double bogey from the bunker on the par-3 12th and missed the green for bogeys on the 14th and 15th holes. He finished with a 2-over 72 and was 7 under overall.

Jerry Kelly was in second place after a 68.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Viktor Hovland is a round away from becoming the European Tour’s first Norwegian winner after he opened up a three-shot lead in the third round of the BMW International Open in Munich.

Five birdies on the back nine helped Hovland record the best round of the day with an 8-under 64 as he moved to 17 under for the tournament.

Hovland already has two PGA Tour titles from the Mayakoba Golf Classic in December and the Puerto Rico Open in February 2020.

Jorge Campillo is in second place at 14 under, with Darren Fichardt one shot further back.

BASEBALL

SEA DOGS: Diego Castillo and Dermis Garcia homered in the fourth inning off Kutter Crawford, and Hayden Wesneski allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings as the Somerset Patriots got their fourth straight win over the Portland Sea Dogs, 3-0 at Hadlock Field.

Crawford retired the first nine batters, but Garcia led off the fourth with a home run over the left-field wall. Garcia made it 3-0 with a two-out, two-run drive to center field.

The Sea Dogs were held to three hits.

NECBL: The Sanford Mainers held off a late rally for a 7-5 win over the Winnipesaukee Muskrats in the first game of a doubleheader in Laconia, New Hampshire.

Winnipesaukee won the second game, 2-1.

OLYMPIC QUALIFYING: Melky Cabrera sparked a comeback from a three-run deficit with a two-run homer, and the Dominican Republic claimed the final Olympic baseball berth by beating Venezuela 8-5 at Puebla, Mexico.

Former Kansas City infielder Ramon Torres hit a go-ahead infield single in a six-run fourth inning for the Dominicans, who will join Japan, the United States, Israel, Mexico and South Korea at the Olympics.

SOCCER

EURO 2020: Denmark advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Wales 4-0 in Amsterdam, getting two goals from Kasper Dolberg.

Dolberg, who was given his first start of the tournament by Denmark Coach Kasper Hjulmand, scored in each half. Joakim Maehle added a third goal in the 88th minute and Martin Braithwaite got the fourth in injury time.

The Danes will next play either the Netherlands or the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals in Baku, Azerbaijan, next Saturday.

• Substitutes Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina scored in extra time to help Italy beat Austria 2-1 in London and advance to the quarterfinals.

Italy also set a team record of 31 matches unbeaten.

Chiesa scored in the fifth minute of extra time and Pessina made it 2-0 in the 105th minute.

Sasa Kalajdzic reduced the deficit with a header in the 114th minute.

Italy will play either defending champion Portugal or Belgium in Munich on Friday.

• Croatia forward Ivan Perisic tested positive for the coronavirus and will miss Monday’s match against Spain in the round of 16.

Perisic will have to self-isolate for 10 days, the Croatian team said in a statement. The rest of the squad and coaching staff tested negative.

GYMNASTICS

OLYMPIC TRIALS: Brody Malone earned an automatic berth on the five-man U.S. Olympic team by winning the Olympic Trials in St. Louis with a two-day all-around total of 171.600.

Yul Moldauer, the 2017 national champion and a three-time world championship team member, was the runner-up to Malone and placed in the top three in four events.

Sam Mikulak, Shane Wiskus and Alec Yoder also were named to the team.

CYCLING

TOUR DE FRANCE: World champion Julian Alaphilippe won the crash-marred opening stage, surging ahead of the main pack in the final steep climb leading to the finish in Landerneau, France.

Alaphilippe crossed the line with an eight-second lead over Michael Matthews. Last year’s overall runner-up, Primoz Roglic, took third.

Four-time champion Chris Froome was in a massive high-speed crash about 10 kilometers from the end and crossed the finish line more than 14 minutes behind Alaphilippe. Froome missed the last two Tours after a crash in June 2019 threatened to end his career.

AUTO RACING

TRUCKS: John Hunter Nemechek beat boss Kyle Busch down the stretch and raced to his fifth Truck Series victory this season, earning bragging rights for Kyle Busch Motorsports at Pocono Raceway.

Nemechek, who dropped down from a full-time ride last year in the Cup Series, beat Busch off the final restart with six laps left in the 60-lap race. Busch finished second, followed by Austin Creed, Tyler Ankrum and Austin Hill.

FORMULA ONE: Championship leader Max Verstappen took pole position for the Styrian Grand Prix in Spielberg, Austria.

The Red Bull driver was timed in 1:03.841 on his third qualifying lap to beat Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas by .194.

With Bottas getting a three-place grid penalty because of a pit-lane incident in Friday’s practice, Verstappen will share the front row with defending champion Lewis Hamilton, who trailed his Mercedes teammate by .032.

EASTBOURNE INTERNATIONAL: Jelena Ostapenko and Alex de Minaur tuned up for Wimbledon by winning their first grass-court titles, in Eastbourne, England.

Ostapenko collected her first WTA trophy since 2019 and fourth overall by beating Anett Kontaveit, 6-3, 6-3.

De Minaur, the men’s No. 2 seed, rallied past No. 3 seed Lorenzo Sonego, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5).

BAD HOMBURG OPEN: Angelique Kerber won her first title since Wimbledon in 2018 by beating Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-2 in Bad Homburg Open, Germany.

TRACK AND FIELD

JAMAICAN TRIALS: Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce cruised to victory in the 100 meters at the Jamaican national championships and will head to Tokyo in search of her third Olympic gold medal.

Fraser-Pryce ran the final Friday night in 10.71 seconds. The 34-year-old Fraser-Pryce won her fourth world title in the 100 in 2019, two years after having a son, Zyon. She is the 2008 and 2012 Olympic champion, and won bronze in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Arike Ogunbowale scored 30 points and the Dallas Wings beat the Washington Mystics 85-74 in Arlington, Texas.
