Mystery Photo for June 20, 2021. Russ Dillingham/Sun Journal Buy this Photo

We had many correct answers for last week’s Mystery Photo of the Maine State Building on the grounds of the Poland Spring Resort in Poland. Many knew it was built for the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 — the first world’s fair — using materials from Maine. After the fair, the Ricker family, who owned the Poland resort at the time, bought it and had it dismantled and shipped on 16 train freight cars to Danville Junction in Auburn. It was then hauled on carts pulled by oxen up to the resort, where it was reassembled and used as a library and art gallery. Most of the contents were sold off in an auction in 1968 after the estate was sold, but many of the important artifacts have been returned. The building is now open to the public and includes a gift shop, Columbian Exhibit, art gallery, Ricker Exhibit, and is also the home of the Maine Golf Hall of Fame. In a random drawing, Tom Printup of Poland was picked as the winner of a $20 Hannaford gift card. Printup is the Poland fire chief, so is quite familiar with the property and also worked for the resort for 20 years in his youth.
