Lawrence “Larry” Stewart
LEWISTON – Lawrence B. Stewart, 78, of Ferry Road, Lewiston passed away Friday, July 9, 2021 with his loving family by his side. Larry bravely and silently fought several illnesses over the past few years.
He was born in Lewiston on Oct. 12, 1942, a son of the late Calvin and Dorothy (Carr) Stewart. He was educated in local schools and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1960.
Upon graduation, Larry proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, being stationed at Pease Air Force base. On April 19, 1963, he married the love of his life, Claudette Caron. Together they would spend 58 years raising a beautiful family while supporting one another in successful business ventures.
Larry’s love of cars would lead him to open Stewarts Auto Body in 1965. He grew the business into today’s Larry Stewart Auto Sales and Rentals, passing his knowledge and success to his son, Curt, in 2015.
In his younger years, Larry enjoyed drag racing with his teammates, now lifelong friends. They travelled across the country enjoying the sounds and thrills of racing.
Later, Larry and Claudette would travel, enjoying vacations across the U.S.A., Canada, the Caribbean, Italy, and the Pyramids in Egypt. They would winter in Florida near many lifelong friends. With these friends Larry enjoyed dining, socializing, an occasional cocktail and the company of all. Breakfast with the gang was always the day’s start – great respected friends who together solved most world problems by 8 a.m.
Larry was a member of The American Legion and The Elks Lodge. He was known for his wit, his generosity to his family, close friends and strangers, and his kind heart.
Larry’s biggest passion was his family, especially his grandchildren, logging many miles following their endeavors.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Claudette Stewart, of Lewiston; a daughter, Marcie LeBel and her husband Andrew of Sabattus, a son, Curtis Stewart and his wife Anita of Sabattus; a brother, Robert Stewart and his wife Connie of Lisbon; his four grandchildren, Erin LeBel of Boston, Brooke LeBel of Vinalhaven, Calvin Stewart of N. Billerica, Mass. and Cameron Stewart of Sabattus.
He was predeceased by a sister, Carol Ann Stewart.
