Gerard H. Grondin

SABATTUS – Gerard H. Grondin, 95, of Sabattus, passed away on Monday, July 19 at Montello Manor Nursing Home. He was born in St. Evariste, P. Quebec, Canada, March 7, 1926. Gerard immigrated to the United States with his wife, Rollande, and children in 1952. A resident of Lewiston and Sabattus for the past 57 years, Gerard was a devoted husband and father. He and Rollande both enjoyed their retirement years in Deerfield Beach, Fla., their winter residence for 26 years, where Rollande pre-deceased him in 2011.
As a youth in the mid 1940s, Gerard worked as a forest ranger for the Canadian Hudson’s Bay company in the summers and in logging camps in the winter, which would ultimately become his life’s work. As a self-employed logging contractor, many knew Gerard, or “Gerry”, as the CB voice coming from a Brockway logging truck, with the call name of “Red Moose”. Others knew him for his yearly delivery of oak logs to keep them warm through the winters when oil prices became unaffordable. Customers knew that his prices would always be fair, and they would always get what they paid for … trust and integrity were a cornerstone to the way he lived, a personal trait that he cherished passing on to his children.
Gerard valued family most of all and was always happy whenever one of the kids, grandkids or great-grandkids just stopped by to visit. He loved to hunt and especially looked forward to the opening day of deer season, where he got to spend time at his hunting camp with his sons and grandsons. He had more fun with the ritual of feeding them “ragout” for supper than going out and bagging the next great buck…he left that to the kids. A highlight of his life that he regaled about with everyone, was a trip to Canada, to hunt Caribou with his sons and grandsons.
Gerard is survived by his four children and their families. His children include Guy Grondin of Sabattus, Larry Grondin and wife, Brenda, of Sabattus, Nicki Grondin and husband, Denis Delehanty, of Purcellville, Va., and Suzanne Grondin and husband, John Gervais, of Folly Beach, SC; his eight grandchildren and families are: Danielle Grondin-Stevens and husband Jeremie, Kyle Gagne, Jayden and Jarrett Stevens, Mia Chicoine, and Tyler Stevens; Travis Grondin, his wife, Stephanie, and sons Cooper and Cody Grondin; Colette Levesque and husband, Keith, and daughters Arya and Isla Levesque; Trevor Grondin and son Calvin Grondin; Megan Carey and husband, Stephen, and sons Caleb, Josiah, and daughter Grace Carey; Ryan Delehanty; Connor and Ty Gervais; Gerard is predeceased by all his family from Canada, Maine, and New Hampshire.
The family wishes to extend a special thankyou to Rena Boudreault, Neda Washer, Rudy Gayton as well as many other wonderful caregivers who lovingly cared for Gerard over the past ten years.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, July 31, from 1 to 4 p.m., at The Fortin Group Funeral Home, 217 Turner St. Auburn, Maine. Arrangements are under the care and direction of The Fortin Group 217 Turner St. Auburn. http://www.thefortingroupauburn.com
