Augusta turned a double play with the bases loaded in the seventh inning and hung on to a 6-2 victory over Bessey Motors on Tuesday night to advance in the Maine American Legion baseball state tournament in Bangor.

Augusta will play again Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.

Bessey Motors loaded the bases with one out in the top-half of the seventh inning when Noah Oufiero grounded to the second baseman and into a double play.

In the top of the first inning, Bessey jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The scoring started when Ty LeBlond led the game off by reaching base via a hit-by-pitch and then advanced on a stolen base and a wild pitch to third. Ethan Cutler drilled a triple and scored LeBlond and two batters later Eli Soehren singled to drive home Cutler.

Augusta scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead, then added two more runs in the second on a Kyle Douin home run to go up 5-2. Augusta tacked on one more run in the fifth and held off Bessey the rest of the way.

Cutler led Bessey with two hits and Kolby Brown pitched all six innings. Augusta got one hit each from six different players.
