100 Years Ago: 1921

One of the loveliest bouquets of vari-colored gladiolus we have seen this season was brought to the Journal office Thursday afternoon from the gardens of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Potter of Upper Main Street. There were fifteen or twenty stalks laden, with brilliant blossoms, no two alike. Mrs. Potter is an ardent lover of this flower and there are no more beautiful gardens in the city than this. Several very rare varieties are included.

50 Years Ago: 1971

Seventy five more large elm trees afflicted with the Dutch Elm Disease are scheduled to be taken down in Auburn before winter sets in. Kenneth Marshall, assistant superintendent of the Auburn Highway Department, said today the diseased trees are in the downtown area, not on the outskirts. He said the city has hired a bucket truck from Reynolds Tree Expert Co. to assist in the tree removal operation.

25 Years Ago: 1996

Melissa Beaule and Kim Dionne of Lewiston High School were chosen by the National Cheerleading Association to go to Hawaii to perform at the Aloha Bow!. The two are raising funds to travel to Hawaii where they will perform during the half-time show and appear on national television with all the other participants. In order to raise money, the duo will hold a bottle drive Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Rooper’s on Sabattus Street. A car wash will be held Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kmart. The cheerleaders will also sell raffle tickets for a hot air balloon ride.
