Evelyn Grace Merrithew

WINDSOR – Evelyn Grace Merrithew, 87, was born July 24, 1934 and entered the gates of Heaven on Aug. 8, 2021 surrounded by loved ones at the Alfond Center for Health.

Evelyn was born in Winthrop to her gentle mother, Eleanor (Barker) and father, Russell Moore. She enjoyed reminiscing about childhood memories of spending time with her dear Grammy, Grace Cummings, baking, and visiting friends. She could capture an audience with the stories of her and her sister, Barbara Morin’s antics in their younger days.

Evelyn devoted time and resources to numerous community causes and charitable organizations supporting women and children including American Leprosy Missions and the Christian Children’s Fund. She served 20-plus years volunteering in the Penquis Foster Grandparent Program. Her courage and indomitable spirit were especially evident when she long defied the odds of medicine and baffled medical experts. Her secret to a long and happy life was simple; spending time visiting and talking on the phone with family, eating chocolate, becoming absorbed in a good book, and loving her children fiercely.

Evelyn is now reunited with her parents, adored sister, and our littlest angel, grandson Mark Barton II. She will finally complete her circle and get to wrap him in her loving arms as she did with all her other children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She looked forward to being greeted in paradise by her loyal best friend and beloved dog, Thor.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by her children Stephen M. Barton and his children (Alicia, Stephen, and Desiree); Cindy A. Ward and her children (Michelle, Michael, and Jason); Mark E. Barton and his children (Wendy, Mark III, and Rebecca); John S. Barton and his children (John, Jason, and Ashley); Shari L. Martin and her children (Lisa, Anthony, and Kristine); and Timothy S. Barton. Her love echos within the thoughts, words and hearts of her 32 great-grandchildren (Casandra, Alexis, Brandy, Anthony, Schuyler, Rylynn, Lucy, Corey, Brooke, Evelyn, Ethan, Tristan, Hayden, Emerzon, Demi, Chanel, Moxie, Shae, Callie, Brynna, Kailynne, Hannah, Jayden, Jenna, Logan, Amelia, Michael, Kailynne, Lakoda, Mikayla, Bella, and Diane) whom she loved dearly, along with her sister’s children and many friends.

The family is eternally grateful for the compassionate care she received from her cardiologist Dr. Wade Hamilton, M.D. We would like to thank the Alfond Center for Health hospital staff on 2 West for their kindness and comfort during Evelyn’s final days.

There will be a public graveside service on Thursday, August 19, at 2 p.m., at Glenside Cemetary in Winthrop. Friends and family are invited to join us in celebrating Evelyn’s life on Saturday, Sept. 4, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Governor Hill Mansion in Augusta.
