Governor Baxter has received a letter from Captain Donald B. MacMillan, the Arctic explorer, now on an expedition to Baffin Island, in which he states that he has reached what may he called the last outpost of  civilization. “I have taken on the last provisions and freshwater and am now awaiting weather to clear before proceeding northward to Hopedale, the first Eskimo settlement,” writes Captain MacMillan. “It is two above freezing here today with many icebergs in sight, but no drift ice to bother us according to wireless reports,” he continues, “The Bowdoin is proving to be a wonderful sea boat. Had her going the other day with sea rail under and fore rigging cutting every wave. Was a bit anxious about my main boom, which was bending like rubber, but she came thru all right.”

Clover employees in Auburn recently thanked their neighbors, Auburn firefighters, for keeping them safe throughout the year. The celebration featured four days of barbecues and special desserts for all shifts, administration and 911 staff. Dan Caron, Clover’s dietary supervisor, Diane Lawler, Maureen Conrad, and Donna Rousseau, all Clover employees, prepared luncheons daily: “Clover felt it was important to thank the fire department for all of they do for us throughout the year,” said Rousseau, director of public relations for Clover. Rousseau said Auburn firefighters conduct fire safety and rescue in-services at the facility throughout the year, work with staff during fire drills and have even donated their time to contribute to the success of some of Clover’s fund-raising efforts for the community. “We are already planning for next year’s celebration,” says Caron. A new and improved event.
