Androscoggin Valley Council of Government will host a household hazardous waste collection from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 28, at the Livermore Transfer Station 1787 Federal Road, in Livermore.
Accepted items include: Aluminum cleaner, aerosols
artists’ paint and mediums, auto transmission fluid, auto body repair products, battery acid, brake fluid, bug and weed killer, bug sprays, car wax with solvents, chemistry sets, cutting oil, drain cleaners, driveway sealer, dry cleaning solvents, engine degreaser, fertilizer with pesticides, fiberglass epoxy, fire extinguishers, flea control products, floor care products, formalin, formaldehyde, fungicide, insecticide, pesticides, furniture polish, gas cylinders (camping size), gasoline, kerosene and diesel, fuels, gun cleaning solvents, hot tub chemicals, lighter fluid, metal polish with solvents, moth balls, muriatic acid, oven cleaners, paint brush cleaner solvent paint—auto and marine, paint thinners and stripers, photographic chemicals, primers and wood preservatives, rat poison, roofing tar, rubber cement, rug, upholstery and spot cleaners, smoke detector, solvents and solvent based glues, swimming pool chemicals, thermometers and thermostats, and latex and oil based paints.

Keep hazardous waste in original container, fo not mix. If leaking wrap in plastic bag and place in a separate box. Place materials in a secure box and place secured box in trunk or truck bed.

Remain in your vehicle. Trained staff will inspect and remove hazardous waste from your vehicle. For your safety and the safety of others, smoking is prohibited in or near the satellite collection — this includes in your vehicle.

Unaccaeptable items include: alkaline batteries, throw in regular trash; biological waste; compressed 20# gas cylinders, check with local gas companies; explosives/ammunition, check with local police; florescent bulbs, check with your local transfer station; prescription medicines, free disposal says in the spring and fall; syringes; radioactive wastes;

The following cleaners are alternatives to household hazardous waste chemicals:
• General purpose cleaner — 3 cups borax, 3 cups white vinegar, 2 gallons hot water. Stir to dissolve, use mop or sponge to clean. Alternative products include Murphy’s Oil Soap or Citra-Solv.
• Scouring powder — 1 cup baking soda mixed with 3 cups borax. Dampen sponge and scoop up mixture. Rub on surface. Let “rest” then rinse well. An alternative product is Bon Ami.
• Paint thinner — let paint particles settle, then pour off clear liquid and reuse.
• Bug sprays/insecticides — for gardens, use companion planting and integrated pest management. Plant disease resistant seeds, pour a line of cream of tartar, red chili pepper, paprika or dried peppermint where ants are
entering the house.
• Insect repellant — do not wear scented products outdoors. Burn citronella candles, punk wood, or incense. An alternative product is Bite Blocker.
