Leon F. Simmons

OCALA, Fla. – Leon F. Simmons of Ocala, Fla. battled dementia for 10 years and died at the age of 80 on August 27, 2021 with his loving wife Phyllis by his side.

Leon was born on June 15, 1941 in Jonesport, Maine, son of the late Ladwick Simmons and Lovilla P. Faulkingham. Step Father Fletcher Alley. Leon went to school in Jonesport, Stonington, Sebago and Andover, Maine.

Leon married his high school sweetheart Avis H. Perkins on Jan. 7, 1962 and they were married 25 years until she passed away in 1987. They raised two daughters together, Sheryl and Linda.

Leon enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in February 1960, although he couldn’t swim that well. He had always loved fishing and the Ocean. He even built a boat when he was 15 years old. He continued to build many boats throughout his lifetime, along with model ships. Some of his models can be found in Anna’s Water Edge restaurant in Phippsburg, including the remote model that he sailed in the arctic ocean while he was serving on the Pacific Strike Team.

Leon’s Coast Guard career took him and his family to many places; Oahu, Hawaii, Missouri, California, Massachusetts, Virginia and Maine. He served on these ships during his career, Coo’s Bay 1960’s. Kukui late 60’s, The Rush in Alameda, Ca 1975.

Leon retired in 1982 and opened an Automotive Garage in Andover. He restored MANY old cars and motorcycles.

Leon met his current wife Phyllis Littlehale in Andover and got married May 20, 2000 and lived in Florida until his death. Phyllis had two children from a previous marriage, Scott and Brian Spaulding. Leon and Phyllis enjoyed going to car meets and rides, travelling, cheering for NASCAR driver Mark Martin and picking up cats along the way–and even a dog (go figure).

Leon was predeceased by his half-sisters, Dot Tucker and Thelma Woodward.

Survivors include his wife Phyllis; Leon and Avis’ two daughters, Sheryl Hoisington and her husband Mike and their children Nicholas and Kyle; and Linda Farwell and her husband Scott and their children Quinn, and Gabrielle and her husband Dennis O’Neil, and a great grandbaby Rory, born August 10 2021; Scott Spaulding and his children Samantha and Sarah; and Brian Spaulding and his children Sabrina and Brianna.

There will be no services for Leon upon his request. His ashes will be scattered at Quoddy Head, Daytona Beach and the Atlantic Ocean in Jonesport, Me. He will also join Avis’s final resting place in Andover.
