Homer Pence
Tuesdays, September 21, 28 – October 5, 12, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.
Britten’s Peter Grimes is an opera set in a 19th century English fishing village. This is a story with the potent dynamic of the individual against the crowd. The fisherman, Grimes, loses his apprentice at sea and the villagers react without understanding the torments he suffers. Composed and premiered in 1945, Peter Grimes restored prestige to English opera and brought wide acclaim to Britten. The score is rich and sonorous, both vocally and instrumentally.

Allen Armstrong
Wednesday, September 22, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.
After a brief overview of climate change science and effects, we will address ways to mitigate climate change, both by personal actions and governmental policy changes. We will use the En-ROADS simulator, a transparent policy simulation model that gives everyone the chance to design their own scenarios to limit future global warming.

Public Safety in Bridgton & the Lakes Region
Chief Phillip A. Jones

Policing in 2021 is a new and complicated challenge. Building and keeping community trust, navigating a post-Covid 19 world, keeping up with ever-changing criminal tactics, and technologies and battling the opioid crisis while offering resources to those who struggle with substance abuse disorder represent some of those challenges. These are examples of the considerations facing police officers and administrators. Chief Jones will give a brief overview of these issues and what our local police department is doing to meet these challenges.

Shakespeare’s Richard III
Margaret Reimer
Thursdays, September 23, 30 – October 7, 14, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.
England’s King Richard III . . . Was he the worst king in English history, or has he been sorely maligned by the popularity of Shakespeare’s play? This autumn we will read the play, take a look at some of Shakespeare’s sources and compare them to the historical record. As per usual, we will use the excellent video sources available in the Pub to help clarify the language and enliven our discussion.
