Donna Gillespie, left, and Carl Sheline are Lewiston’s mayoral candidates for the upcoming November election. This summer, Mayor Mark Cayer announced he would not seek reelection.

LEWISTON — The upcoming races for mayor, City Council and School Committee are set.

The city’s next mayor will be one of two relative political newcomers: Carl Sheline and Donna Gillespie, who are vying to replace Mayor Mark Cayer.

Sheline, co-owner of Munka Coworking on Lisbon Street, is new to politics but well-known in the business sector and larger community. He’s rolled out a campaign website and lawn signs featuring the slogan “Lewiston Forward.”

Gillespie, who ran unsuccessfully for the Ward 2 council seat in 2017 and 2019, was a longtime caseworker for the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. The Lewiston Democratic Party endorsed her for the Ward 2 seat in 2019.

The deadline for candidates to submit nomination papers was 4:30 p.m. Friday, with some qualifying for the Nov. 2 ballot in the final hours.

For the City Council, all but two seats are assured to see new faces next year.

Incumbents Lee Clement in Ward 6 and Stephanie Gelinas in Ward 7 will be on the ballot.

In other wards, former School Committee Chairwoman Linda Scott is running against Dane Morgan in Ward 1. Morgan recently served on Cayer’s ad hoc Equity and Diversity Committee.

Robert McCarthy and Caleb Roebuck will face off in Ward 2; Scott Harriman is running unopposed in Ward 3; Rick Lachapelle is running unopposed in Ward 4; and Laurier Pease, Amy Sanchez and Charles Soule will run in Ward 5.

Unlike the City Council, the election for Lewiston School Committee will see five incumbents remain on the ballot.

Chairwoman Megan Parks is running for reelection for her at-large seat against Jason Lavoie.

Incumbent Bruce Damon will run against Matt Jadud in Ward 1; incumbent Janet Beaudoin will run against Ed Jawor and Jami Simpson in Ward 2; Elizabeth Eames will run unopposed for Ward 3; incumbent Tanya Whitlow will run unopposed for Ward 4; and Ashley Medina will be unopposed for Ward 5.

In Ward 6, Leigh Albert will run against Meghan Hird, and incumbent Paul Beauparlant will face a challenge from Heather Benson in Ward 7.

The election is Tuesday, Nov. 2.
