Topsham plans to honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks with a memorial tribute at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the flagpole center of the Town Hall and at Public Service building, 100 Main St.

Speakers will include Chief Chris McLaughlin of the Topsham Fire Department and Chief Marc Hagan of the Topsham Police Department, who will both share thoughts of that day. Topsham Town Manager Derek Scrapchansky, who was serving in the U.S. Navy as a pilot at the time of the attacks, will honor those lost and affected by the attacks; he will also be emcee.

Paramedic/Fire Fighter Elizabeth Reeves of Topsham Fire and Rescue, who was a Fire Department New York (FDNY) employee on the day of the attacks, will share her reflections, and Pastor Mark Rockwood will give a benediction.

As part of the memorial, the names of each of the victims of the 9/11 attacks will be read. This remembrance will include the World Trade Center, Pentagon and Shanksville, Pa., first responders, and the civilians who died.

The ceremony is expected to run about one hour with the reading of names to follow, taking up to three hours. There is no obligation to anyone to stay for that duration. The intent is to honor the victims by voicing their names out loud in memoriam on this 20th anniversary.

All are welcomed and encouraged to attend. Those who would like to participate in the reading of names or seek more information can contact Reeves at 917-209-6066 or ereeves@topshammaine.com.
