LEWISTON — Leigh (Weisenburger) Albert, a longtime local higher education leader, is running for the Ward 6 School Committee seat.

According to a recent campaign announcement, Albert has “dedicated her career to access and inclusion in higher education and seeks to do the same for Lewiston public schools. Known for her energy, enthusiasm, and strategic vision and structured planning, Albert works hard to instill the value of life-long learning for all students and colleagues who are curious and exhibit potential.”

“Education is paramount for the future success of Lewiston and Maine,” Albert said. “Lewiston Public Schools are the backbone of our community and should continue to deliver all students dynamic opportunities to grow, develop, and learn in creative and fundamental ways – building critical life skills while also supporting their mental well-being.”

Albert said she is eager to serve the citizens of Lewiston in the critical role of School Committee member to ensure that Lewiston public schools – where her children attend prekindergarten and first grade – provide all students with challenging and innovative learning opportunities and diverse co-curricular growth offerings while inhabiting healthy, kind, and safe classroom communities.

She is vice president for enrollment and dean of admission and financial aid at Bates College, and has been employed by the college for 17 years.

She’s also a member of the YWCA of Central Maine’s board of directors, serving as treasurer. She is also a member of the Barbara Bush Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Family Advisory Council, and has been active with the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute’s Corporate Leaders Network since 2016.

Leigh was recently nominated for the L/A Metro Chamber of Commerce’s Finest Under 40 Education Award.

Albert is running against Meghan Hird. Incumbent Ron Potvin is not running for reelection.

The election is Tuesday, Nov. 2.
