DEAR SUN SPOTS: I was wondering when the Planters Peanuts store in Lewiston closed. It was at Lisbon and Main streets in the 1950s and 1960s. They had someone dressed up as Mr. Peanut walking around on the sidewalk to get people to go in and visit the store, where they had fresh-roasted peanuts. If you drove up Main Street and passed Lisbon Street, you’d always see Mr. Peanut out there waving to people in their cars. — No name, no town

ANSWER: I’m wondering if it was someone “dressed up as Mr. Peanut” or the real Mr. Peanut! Can anyone out there in Sun Spots Land help answer these questions?

I love these kinds of fun questions and it would be so cool to hear your memories and stories about Mr. Peanut waving to passersby in downtown Lewiston.

There was also a store in Portland at 571 Congress St. And did you know that last February, Kraft Heinz announced it would sell Planters and its other nuts businesses to Hormel for $3.35 billion?

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Before the pandemic, I sent in an application, DD214, and a check to have my father’s name added to the memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Lewiston. I cannot seem to find the right person to contact to find out what happened although they did cash the check. I’d really like to surprise my dad by having him see his name on the memorial stone. — No name, no town

ANSWER: The information on the city’s website was updated with Jerry Dewitt’s contact information about a month ago. Jerry’s phone number is 576-0376 and his email is jdewitt@tcmhs.org. He is in charge of the names on the memorial stones.

You can also contact Brandon Pelletier, the L&A Veterans Council treasurer, who handles the applications and checks. You can call him at 713-5589.

Your veteran must be presently serving, retired, or passed on, and honorably discharged from one of the branches of the United States military, including the Reserves or National Guard, Merchant Marine or any other branches of the military. A copy of any DD214, 215, 217-MC , WD AGO 53-55, or a photo in uniform is to be attached to the application. The cost for the engraving is $35.
