POLAND — The Poland Historical Society is scheduled to host an information session and site walk about “Joe’s Road” at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, in the Poland Municipal Complex, 1229 Main St., Route 26, in Poland.

“Joe’s Road” is an abandoned farm road that provided access between the property of Josiah “Joe” Dunn and Lower Range Pond in Poland. The first reference to this road can be found in the town meeting notes from September 1806, and it is clearly shown on a map dated 1858.

The road was likely abandoned following construction of the Portland and Rumford Falls Railway in 1895.

Fred Huntress, who will lead the discussion, has spent his life working in the Maine woods as a forester and surveyor. He is passionate about Maine history, particularly in regard to Poland and the surrounding area.

Huntress will discuss how he found out about Joe’s Road, and talk about the research techniques he used to locate the long-abandoned track.

Following the presentation and slide show, interested parties can relocate to Plains Road for a trail walk highlighting the remnants of “Joe’s Road.”
