Robert Arthur Miller
TOGUS – We shall forever miss Robert Arthur Miller, 75, who passed away on Sept. 11, 2021, at the Togus Veteran’s Hospital after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born on April 2, 1946, in Lewiston to Aubrey Bryant Miller, Jr. and Thelma Bagley Miller.After graduation from Edward Little High School, at the age of 18, he joined the U.S. Army Jan. 25, 1965 and was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division: 2nd Battalion: 8th Cavalry: 1st platoon as a paratrooper. He left Charleston, S.C. Nov 1965 and arrived in Qui Nhon, Vietnam a month later. His division went to An Khe to set up a base for the cavalry and was the first division to arrive after the special forces whose camp had just been overrun by the enemy. He left Vietnam in January and was air evacuated to Japan after contracting malaria and dysentery in Vietnam and then returned to the U.S. to serve the rest of his time at Fort Devens, Mass. He was discharged in January of 1968.He was a free spirit and loved sailing on his catamaran, skiing, hiking, sky diving, building his house in Guilford next to his son, and growing things. Driving the country and camping in his van was his perfect way to live. He, often with his sister, enjoyed the Everglades, Key West and many other parts of Florida, Texas, Alabama, and western Pennsylvania. He was a lineman most of his working life and took jobs around the country.He has left us with loving memories of a selfless soul that never wanted to make anyone uncomfortable: his son, Robert Miller II and his wife Amy, his grandson Aiden; his sister, Marilyn Burgess, nephew Roy Burgess and companion Tanya Hanson; his niece Alicia Taylor; special friends Danny McAlister and his wife Barbara McAlister; and, of course, his beloved dog and companion, Molly.Arrangements will be handled by the military. Services will be held at 12 p.m. on Oct. 29 at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery at 143 Blue Star Avenue in Augusta
