Norris Eugene Conant

LEWISTON – Norris Eugene Conant, 84, of Canton, died Monday Oct. 11, 2021 at Marshwood Center in Lewiston. He was born Feb. 27, 1937 in Canton, a son of John Carlton and Gladys Conant.

He was a 1955 graduate of Canton High School and on Aug. 31, 1963, married Jackie Cox in Canton. After 50 years of marriage she passed away on Sept. 22, 2013.

Born and raised on the family farm, Conant Acres, he enjoyed working on the farm for many years and also worked off the farm at the Corn Shop in Canton and as a rural mail carrier in Canton and Hartford.

He was a life-long supporter of 4-H and advocated tirelessly for the 4-H baby beef and lamb program. He was Superintendent of the Cattle Dept. for the Oxford County Fair for many years. Norris also served on the Board of Directors of the Farm Credit Bureau of Maine and on the Maine National Resource council. He also served on the Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation Committee.

A native of Canton, he cared deeply about his hometown town, his family heritage and surrounding communities. He was a member of the Dixfield Lions Club and remained an active member for over 40 years. He was a founding member of the Canton Planning Board and served for several years on the Budget Committee. He was also a founding member and served for over 40 years on the Board of Directors of Whitney Brookside Housing.

Following his retirement in 1996, he enjoyed gardening, producing maple syrup and tending to his fruit and vegetable farm stand. He was a NASCAR fan that was always rooting for Jeff Gordon. Grandpa also enjoyed supporting the creative activities and talents of his grandchildren.

He is loved by his three sons, John (JJ) Conant of Canton and their three children, Justin (Hannah) Conant and their son, Noah; Jessica Conant and Jillian Conant; Tony and his dog, Kandie of Canton and Andy (Amanda) Conant of Hartford; siblings, Olive Dubord of Jay, Duane Conant of Canton, Ann (Gene) Allen of Jay, and George (Patricia) Conant of Gloucester, Mass. Also survived by sisters-in-law, Joanne Conant, Beverly Conant, and Linda Cox; a cousin Lola Sayer of Canton; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by siblings, Clifford, Clinton and Ralph, an infant sister, Lucille; and two brothers-in-law, Eugene Dubord and David Cox; two sisters-in-law, Jeannette Conant and Betty Conant; and a niece, Pam Fleury.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial visitation on Saturday Oct. 16 from 4-7 p.m. at the Wiles Remembrance Center, 308 Franklin Rd., Jay. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday Oct. 17 at 11 a.m. at the Bradbury Chapel, Canton Point Road.
