Children at Dixfield Elementary School had a chance Wednesday morning to learn a bit about how their coastal cousins lobstered and dug clams when a member of a long-time fishing family brought the coast to them. Brenda Skillin, a library media specialist at Dirigo Middle School, commutes on weekends to her family’s home in Freeport. As the latest in a long line of lobster trappers and fishermen who frequently catches lobsters on the weekends with her husband, Skillin showed tapes of lobstering, then created a hands-on “clam flat” for children to dig in. And those who had parental permission were allowed to taste a steamed mussel. All students in kindergarten through grade 4 had a chance to dig clams and mussels in a sandpit set up near the school’s butterfly garden.

The material used in Looking Back is produced exactly as it originally appeared although misspellings and errors may be corrected.
