100 Years Ago: 1921
A Lewiston Journal reporter whose veracity has always been unquestioned turned in the following story Thursday morning: “A flock of doves were accepting a meal from the hand of a friend in Auburn the other day, and in their midst was one bird, whose coloring made the plumage of his brethren seem dull and colorless. He was pink — and deep rose. This hue extended in a deep band around his tail, which close to his body was white. The tips of his wings and his back were of the same color. The rest of his feathers were tinged pink and when he spread his wings and flew he made a vivid flash of color. It suggested some bird of the tropics rather than one of the feathered friends familiar in the streets of every New England city.
50 Years Ago: 1971
The annual “Mini Fair” is being planned at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church on Nov. 4, with many members of the parish participating to make it a successful event. Fair activities begin at 10:30 and continue until 3:30 In the afternoon with luncheon, served under the direction of Mrs. Fred MacNaught, and Mrs. Austin Van Soucy from 11:30 to 1:30. A variety of items will be available at the numerous booths being prepared including home cooked goodies and things for Christmas giving.
25 Years Ago: 1996
Melinda Campbell of the Auburn School System will discuss the art program in the Auburn elementary schools at the Monday meeting of the Auburn Art Club at the High Street Congregational Church. Members will learn how art appreciation and art instruction is taught today. Hostesses for the 2 p.m. meeting will be Mrs. Donald H. Horsman, Mrs. John B. Annett, Mrs. Carleton B. Ring and Mrs. Robert D. Albro.
