PHILLIPS —In the fall of 2020 members of the PACC Phillips area Community Center voted to carry out an idea for a time capsule to be buried in Phillips.

It began by obtaining the voting list from Phillips, Avon and Madrid. A letter was drawn up and sent to every resident on the list. They also obtained addresses for some of those whose properties spanned several generations in Phillips asking them to share their knowledge for future families.

All they asked was “For a five dollar donation any individual may add to the time capsule a forever stamped pre addressed business size envelope addressed to the destination of the persons choice. For example, someone may submit an envelope addressed to his or her home address with enclosed photos of how the place looked at present. Maybe include directions to find some sort of buried treasure on the property, or simply write a letter from the 2020 owners to the future occupants of the property. Their envelopes will be mailed when the time capsule is opened.”

The time has come, and a site selected for the burial which will take place on Nov. 7 at 1 p.m., at the flagpole in front of the Phillips Historical Society at the intersection of main, pleasant, and Sawyer streets. This area has been flagged by Dig Safe and Mount Blue Standard Water District.

Sealing of the stainless-steel capsule donated by Mathew Perodeau will be done on November 4. It will be sealed with a 50-year silicone caulking. preparation of the ground will be done by Paul Gardner. A bronze plaque donated by Scott and Sylvia Adams will be secured to a stone from the local pit by George Berry. All names of the PACC members and the contributors will be sealed in the capsule. All contributors will be notified by mail of the date and time of the burial so they may attend the ceremony. Opening of the capsule will coincide with the 250th anniversary of the town of Phillips in 2062.
