PARIS — The State Fire Marshal’s Office said Thursday that a fire that destroyed a three-story house on Western Avenue on Wednesday night was accidental and caused by a person welding.

The five people inside the home at 68 Western Ave. escaped unharmed.

The Fire Marshal’s Office released no other information, and the Paris Fire Department declined to comment on the fire Thursday.

The home is near the intersection of Hillside Avenue.

The first alarm sounded just after 9 p.m. after a report of flames on the top floor of the home. A short time later, a second alarm went out and Paris firefighters began calling for assistance from other departments.

Twenty minutes later, the building was described as engulfed in flames, as crews from Norway, Oxford, West Paris, Buckfield, Hebron, Poland and Mechanic Falls were headed to the scene.

At least one of three vehicles parked near the home was said to be ablaze.
