NORWAY — The Select Board heard complaints Thursday about excessive use of dirt bikes and ATVs dashing up and down Wiley Road, which is off Waterford Road (Route 118) about five miles from downtown.

A resident of the road said she feels unsafe, saying the riders — both juveniles and adults — are aggressive driving back and forth at high speeds and burning rubber. They have also confronted her. She fears someone walking on the road could get hurt.

Police Chief Rob Federico admitted that the motorbikes and ATVs are an issue there. “It’s not a real nice place to live at the moment,” he said.

When his officers patrol the road and see the vehicles, they quickly flee onto the trails. Earlier on Thursday, one individual stalled his bike attempting to flee when Federico arrived, enabling him to file several charges against the juvenile and impound his motorcycle.

To help solve the issue, the town is coordinating police response with code enforcement and the Department of Health and Human Services.

DHHS involvement is due to juveniles riding bikes and ATVs regularly during school hours.

The board accepted a $200 donation to the Norway Fire Department from Sam Elliot of Paris for its help in extinguishing a fire recently on King Hill Road in Paris. Fire Chief Dennis Yates requested the money be placed in the department’s training account.

Town Manager Dennis Lajoie reported the temporary fuel system at the new town garage is up and running. Equipment has been ordered and the concrete pad is expected to be poured next week.

MarWin Construction of Falmouth will build the new fuel dispensing system at the garage. The old system was out of compliance and needed to be replaced, according to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. The electricity required to run it was hooked to the old garage, which has been torn down and therefore required temporary power to be installed.

The Highway Department is installing plow gear and the trucks are being prepared for winter.

Lajoie and Recreation Director Debra Partridge are continuing to work on mapping the plots at Lake View Cemetery.

The board approved a revised handbook for town employees.
