WATERVILLE — The Alfond Youth & Community Center plans to host the Mobile Vet Center from Lewiston Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 126 North St., to offer its care giver support program, Post 9/11 transition team, and assistance with enrolling veterans in the VA health care system and obtaining benefits.

Throughout the year, and especially on its first-ever Military Appreciation Week, the center supports veterans and their families with programs and initiatives that improve their well-being and provide opportunities to connect with each other. All week long, veterans, members of the military and their immediate family will receive free membership, use of the facility, and 15% discount on membership registration.

“Military families have many needs when a loved one is away from home,” said Ken Walsh, AYCC CEO, according to a news release from the center. “Whether it’s providing a place where kids can make friends and have a sense of belonging or providing a place for adults to meet health goals, the AYCC is here and able to help.”

First established by the Armed Services YMCA and recognized by the U.S. government ever since, Y-USA’s Military Family Month recognizes the dedication and service of military personnel and their families. Through programs established by the YMCA, AYCC is able to offer free and discounted YMCA memberships through the Military Outreach Initiative and child care through the Respite Child Care program all year long.

Since 2008, the Military Outreach Initiative has provided more than 82,000 Y memberships to military members and their families and more than 157,000 children received child care through the Respite Child Care program or similar programs. Waterville is adding to these numbers by enrolling local service men and women during this week of celebration.

Similarly, through its affiliation with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, AYCC offers an annual voucher of $200 through Mission Youth Outreach for youth of military families to use towards any youth programming — swim lessons, karate classes, child care and membership opportunities.
