100 Years Ago: 1921

The new electric advertising sign that has been placed on the building at the corner of Main and Chapel Streets is one of the most attractive in the city – made so by its simplicity. It is in the form of a star, the edges outlined by electric lights and in the center, in upraised ground glass letters, is the word “taxi,” lighted from underneath by invisible lights.

50 Years Ago: 1971

The annual Mother-Daughter banquet of the University of Maine Alumnae Club will be held in the Guild Room of the High Street Congregational Church at six o’clock Wednesday. Joan and Tom Rowe, ELHS graduates, will present a program of folk songs. Mr. Rowe is a music major at the University of Maine at Gorham and Mrs. Rowe is a student at the Central Maine General Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Lewis Payne is chairman of the committee and assisted by Mrs. Richard Bastow. Mrs. Joseph B. Chaplin Jr., Mrs. Alfred N. Savignano Jr., and Mrs. Paul Johnson.

25 Years Ago: 1996

The American Association of Retired Persons local chapter 4077 will meet at 1:15 pm Monday at the Multi-Purpose Center, Birch Street. President Shirley Small will hold a director’s meeting at 12:30. Dr. Roy L. Farnsworth, professor of geology emeritus, Bates College, will present a short lecture and a slide program on Baxter State Park entitled “A Stroll Through the Park.” Attendance drawings, pot-o-gold raffle and bargain book sale will be held. Refreshments will be furnished by Madeleine Beaulieu, Lou Sanford and Shirley Small. Members, guests and those wishing information on AARP are invited.
