It’s that time of year when our local kids have seen the first snow on the mountain and are starting to dream about what’s ahead…snowshoeing and XC skiing at the Rangeley Lakes Trails Center and skiing and boarding at Saddleback.

As we prepare for our favorite season, we ask that you take a moment to think about those children for whom winter is a little tougher. They, too, want to be getting the gear ready, but perhaps recent events in the economy or their families make it impossible for them to look forward with any certainty to skiing, boarding or snowshoeing this year. They hope to be gliding over those freshly groomed trails at the Trails Center or at Saddleback, but money is tight. It just might not happen for them.

As you may know, an extremely generous donor has made it possible for all Rangeley area kids to receive season passes for $50 each at Saddleback. That is truly amazing! The RSSF makes it possible for our local kids to access the RLTC for free. Our role is to see that financial shortages for families do not prevent our children from being able to participate in XC skiing, snowshoeing, skiing or boarding, to take lessons and get rentals as needed. We understand that many of you have already designated your monetary donations elsewhere, but we hope you will see how much a donation to RSSF will be appreciated. Gliding down a trail may not seem like a necessity, but for many of us from the Rangeley area, it is part of our way of life.

There are two important things to note: 1) The families who seek our help pay whatever amount they can toward the cost of programs, rentals or passes. 2) Other than the cost for mailings, all donations go directly to assisting families with the above-mentioned costs.

Won’t you help us insure that all who apply will be able to receive assistance this year as they have in the past 39 years? Any amount you care to give will be most appreciated. Please make your contribution check to: Rangeley Health and Wellness (memo RSSF) and mail it to Rangeley Ski Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 581, Rangeley, ME 04970.

Thank you for your help and THINK SNOW!

Claire and Don Chase, RSSF
