Donald Francis McConville

SWEDEN – Donald Francis McConville, born in Newton, Mass., Feb. 2, 1926, died at his home in Sweden, Maine Nov. 30, 2021. Father Joseph A. McConville, mother, Mary E. (Petty) McConville.

United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y. (1945). Active duty, U.S. merchant marine 1945-1946. Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. US Navy, active duty (Korean War).

Movie theatre owner and operator, Bronxville, N.Y. – late 1950s.

Moving picture executive, Screen Gems, Columbia Pictures, retiring as Vice President of Columbia Pictures International in 1983.

Predeceased by his parents; his brother, Joseph E. McConville of Sarasota, Fla.., his sister-in-law Eleanor McConville of Sarasota Fla. and later Detroit, Mich., his sister Janet M. Garcia of Windham, Maine, his brother-in-law Mario Garcia of Windham, Maine, and his nephew Joseph A. McConville of Scarsdale, N.Y.

Mr. McConville is survived by his nephew Peter Garcia and wife Patricia of Auburn, Maine, his niece Linda and husband William Marion of Wooster, Ohio, his nephew Stephen Garcia and wife Mary of Cranford, N.J.; and numerous grand nieces, nephews and cousins. He leaves behind many dear friends who will miss his friendship, generosity, and loyalty.

Raconteur, salesman par excellence, charming host to famous and ordinary folks; ever ready to spin a colorful tale of his worldwide exploits in the film industry, Don McConville charmed most he met, and commanded respect.

After a colorful and successful career buying and selling motion pictures around the world, Mr. McConville built or restored a series of homes in Savannah, Southhampton, N.Y., Manhattan and Sweden, Maine, where he loved to entertain friends and family and displayed mementos of family and his many years of international business travel.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 225 South High Street, Bridgton, Maine 04009 at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021.

Interment will be at a later date.
