The Maine Nordiques battled back Saturday night and defeated the Jamestown Rebels 4-3 in a North American Hockey League East Division game at The Colisee in Lewiston.

The Nordiques took an early lead but lost it and soon faced a two-goal deficit.

“Similar to (Friday night) we had some breakdowns in the defensive zone, where we didn’t hit our details,” Maine coach Matt Pinchevsky said. “Fortunately for our group, our power play bailed us out and executed.”

The Nordiques were 2-for-2 on the power play, while the Rebels were 1-for-5.

The win ends Maine’s four-game losing streak.

Auburn native and Army recruit Reese Farrell and Maine recruit Tyler Gaulin each had a goal and an assist for the Nordiques.

“(Farrell) is really trying to dial in and apply what is learned in his game, and he’s willing to do whatever it takes for the team to succeed as he continues to develop,” Pinchevsky said.

Maine (9-12-3, 21 points) opened the scoring six-plus minutes into the game when Tristan Fasig scored his fifth goal of the season.

However, just like Friday night, the Rebels (12-12-1, 25 points) scored three straight goals, starting with Joseph Calvarino’s game-tying tally midway through the first period.

Coby Weber’s goal gave Jamestown a 2-1 lead. Conor Sedlak made it 3-1 with four-and-half minutes remaining in the opening period.

Nordiques pulled goalie Gus Holt after the first period, during which he made nine saves. Avery Sturtz stopped all 27 shots he faced in relief.

“Again, we got great goaltending,” Pinchevsky said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t play as stable as we should have in front of Gus Holt, but he was prepared to win us a hockey game. We had to take some action and stop the bleeding. We (chose) to put Avery back in, who played excellent last night.”

Sturtz made 41 saves in Friday night’s 3-2 loss.

The Nordiques had a strong second period. Farrell scored seven minutes into the period on the power play off assists by defenseman Nick Bernardo and Gaulin.

Gaulin scored with six minutes remaining in the period to tie the game at 3-3, with Farrell and Brendan Gibbons picking up the assists.

Maine carried the momentum into the third period, and Nick Bernardo scored a power-play goal with 7:21 remaining in the second period to give the Nordiques a 4-3 lead. Farrell and Gaulin had the assists.

Jon Howe stopped 24 shots for the Rebels.

The Nordiques host the New Jersey Titans next Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.

“We talked about it postgame: the reason why people love winning is because it’s fun, and it feels real good,” Pinchevsky said. “We want to continue to play for this feeling, so we asked the players to digest, immerse themselves in this feeling. Talk about it, think about it, stay with it, so we can duplicate it against an opponent that we owe a couple wins against at home.”
