GREENWOOD — Greenwood resident Destiny Hughes shared her concern for better maintenance of roads, and resident Jenni Johnston brought up parking in the streets at the Greenwood Selectman meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 7.

Hughes was concerned the streets weren’t getting plowed early enough in the morning. She was fearful the roads were not being maintained before the school buses were on the road.

“We are now purchasing my parents home [my childhood home]. I have three children. One of them rides the bus,” explained Hughes. “I’m not sure if [they] know what time our bus goes through. It’s super early. So they actually pick my son up at 6:37. So, I mean they’re starting it [bus pick-up] and you know, almost six o’clock, maybe even earlier. So I’m not sure if it’s just their focus on a different part [of the road]. They believe it’s more treacherous than another.”

Road Foreman Alan Seames, said it takes them around four in a half hours to plow, salt, and sand the roads, and then go back and do it again.

Hughes brought to their attention that on her road alone, between her house and her parent’s current home, there are 18 spots covered in ice that do not see sun light all year long. Seames mentioned that this was winter in Maine. This lead to a conversation which was, in effect, sand or salt?

Seames says the sand blows away because it is so cold outside or because of the traffic. In the end, Seames stated he was using the state recommended amount of both, and that during an ice storm it was his top priority to plow the main streets as the schools were likely shut down, therefore the buses wouldn’t be running. He said overall, there were 40 miles of road with 80 miles of travel line.

Jenni Johnston shared her concerns about the parking on both sides of Howe Hill Road near Westside Lodge. Slectwoman Amy Chapman shared the following response from Greg Luetje, Mt. Abram general manager:

“I’m equally concerned about the parking situation on Howe Hill. We opened up more parking on the main side and will try to get some signs up so people can take advantage of it.

“Also, if the town and folks on Howe Hill wouldn’t mind having ‘no parking’ signs installed on one side of the road I think that would help make it safer. Next year we will hopefully be able to extend our parking lot at the west side. There are plans and permits in place with Mainland to extend it another 60′. If there are other ways we can help, please let me know.”
