100 Years Ago: 1921

Odd Fellows Hall has been closed to public dances. Orrin Kriley, who, associated with Chester Warren, has been conducting dances every Wednesday evening in this hall, was notified Tuesday night that he could not have the hall for any more public dances. Owing to the short notice to Mr. Kelley and the fact that patrons had not heard of the action, a large number gathered at the entrance of the hall Wednesday night, expecting the usual dance.

50 Years Ago: 1971

The Lewiston-Auburn chapter of the American National Red Cross will sponsor State Sen. Donald J. Bernard in the Swimathon Sunday at the new YWCA pool on East Avenue in Lewiston. Participants in the Swimathon are helping raise funds for equipment at the new pool. Bernard has agreed to swim one lap of the pool for each dollar pledged to the facility.

25 Years Ago: 1996

Sam Jenness, Junior bass player in the Oxford Hill High School Jazz Ensemble, has been accepted to the Maine All-State Jazz Festival. He is the son of John Jenness of South Paris. Acceptance to this festival is by audience, which was held in Bangor in October. Students Jazz performers from around Maine audition for professional adjudicators. The audition consists of a prepared piece, sight reading. and improvisation. Jenness’s performance at the auditions has awarded him his current place as one of the three best jazz players in the state. Aside from his participation in the high school jazz ensemble, Jenness is also a member of the Oxford Hills High School Orchestra, The festival will be held Jan.7-9 at Dexter Regional High School in Dexter and is sponsored by the Maine Music Educators Association.
