100 Years Ago: 1921

Four skating rinks are to be provided for Auburn boys and girls, by the city council. At the budget hearing Monday evening it was suggested that an additional $300 be added to the budget and be expended in providing the younger folks an opportunity for wholesome recreation; and this suggestion will be carried out at once.

50 Years Ago: 1971

Elwin W. Thurlow, a native of Auburn, who first joined the Central Maine Power Co. as a meter reader in 1981 was elected Thursday as the electrical power utility’s president. The board of directors also announced William H. Dunham, who is married to a Lewiston native, will become chairman of the company. Durham would continue as a member of the board, headed by the  Auburn man, and would remain the company’s chief executive officer, responsible for overall company operations.

25 Years Ago: 1996

(from a Journal photo) The Pulp and Paperworkers Resource Council Education group who were at Pettingill School in Lewiston recently presented a puppet show and papermaking to the fourth-and fifth-graders. They stressed the importance of maintaining the forest for numerous products associated with day to day living. They listed the number of jobs associated with forest products, and they relayed facts about why nature and the environment need to be respected through responsible forest and wildlife management. Artie Muse, a Mead Paper Co. employee and educator in this field, is seen instructing Kyle Dupuis, a student in Carmen Dufesne’s fourth grade, on how to strain the watery pulp, the basic step to making paper. Julia Wood, Dustin Pizzi, Abbie Roy and Tony Travaglini await their turn at the process.
