RUMFORD — Week 3 in the MV Rec Basketball League saw a few close, competitive games.  Horace Mann Insurance had a bye.
In the first game, Hotel Rumford (2-0) took little time to take a double-digit lead and cruised to a 73-44 thumping of Jay (0-2). The Hotel was paced by Tom Danylik with 20 points, followed by venerable Scot New with 17 (3 threes) and 40-something Eric Canwell with 12.  Jay was led by Jake Turner with 16 and Dan Kuklinski with 12 points.
In the second game, Smart Care of Dixfield (3-0) and Archies of Mexico (2-1) went down to the wire, with the former pulling out a 78-76 victory while making up a 10 point deficit late. The winning team was led by Blake Rothwell, who also hit the winning shot, with 26 points, Cody St. Germain added 19, and Ben Holmes another 14. Archies got 26 points from Eric Berry, 20 (4 threes) from Owen Jones,
In the final game of the day, Cannatopia Runners (1-2) of Wilton/Farmington earned their inaugural league victory, quieting The Thunder of Rumford (0-3), 76-68. The game was back and forth throughout, but the winners established a small lead over the last few minutes. The Runners were paced by Hunter Meeks with 24 points, Eric Gimelli 14, and Michael Black 11.  The Thunder was led by Will Bean with 16 points, Keegan Davis and Dravin Finnegan with 13 each, and Parker Davis with 12.
