Louise Chase

CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Louise Chase, 93, of Carrabassett Valley left this life peacefully with daughter, Lynn, by her side in Madison, at Maplecrest Rehabilitation and Living Center on Monday, Dec. 13, 2021.

She was born in Waterbury, Vt., on July 24, 1928 to Ruth Woodard and Arthur Schmidt, graduating from Franklin, N.H., high school in 1946. Following graduation, she worked as a legal secretary and insurance clerk for the Honorable Eugene W. Leach in Franklin.

Louise married Gordon J. Sargent on June 28, 1947 and were together the parents of Christopher Scott and Lynn Anne. They divorced in 1963. Louise married William C. “Bill” Chase on Dec. 7, 1968, becoming stepmother to Steven and Carole.

Louise and Bill resided in Dover, N.H., where she worked and volunteered at Garrison High School, First Parish Church, and as a Welcome Wagon Hostess. In 1971 she returned to full-time employment as a legal secretary to Attorney Ovila J. Gregoire, graduating from paralegal studies at UNH.

Louise and Bill moved to Lyman, where she volunteered at a local nursing home. They were both active in the Goodwin Mills United Methodist Church. Louise was a certified lay speaker and served as secretary, convention delegate, and outreach chairperson. She later worked as secretary to the administrator of Greenwood Nursing Home in Sanford.

The couple retired to Carrabassett Valley in 1993, where they became active in Sugarloaf Christian Ministry, serving in many capacities including the Ministry Board, Bible Adventure Days, and assisting with worship services.

Louise Chase became a Carrabassett Valley Public Library board member in 1994, serving as Library Board Treasurer and active volunteer for decades. Louise was also a proud Red Hatter.

Louise and Bill were avid skiers, hikers, cyclists, boaters, snowshoers, and dedicated pet owners. They both loved and enjoyed nature and outdoor activities. In Carrabassett Valley they formed deep friendships and found a true sense of peace.

Louise is survived by Lynn Sulloway and her husband Ernie of N.H.; Carole Luca of N.H.; Steven Chase of Naples, Fla.; and many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Bill; and son, Scott.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022 at 12 p.m. at the Richard Bell Chapel at Sugarloaf under the direction of Pastors Pamela and Earle Morse.
