LEWISTON — With temperatures expected to hit zero or colder Tuesday night, officials in Auburn have announced plans to open the public library to the homeless and others needing to stay warm and safe.

The National Weather Service is forecasting colder-than-zero temperatures Tuesday night for much of Maine, with winds gusting to 25 mph, making it feel like minus 20 to minus 25 degrees.

The Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St., is scheduled to be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

It was unclear Monday if protective masks will be required.

Local shelters include:

• Hope Haven Gospel Mission, 200 Lincoln St., Lewiston, with room for 16 men and 16 women and their children. 207-783-6086.

• New Beginnings, 491 Main St., Lewiston, for those ages 12 to 19. 207-795-4077.

• St. Martin de Porres, 23 Bartlett St., Lewiston, exclusively for men and only by referral. 207-786-4690.

• Sheltered by Jesus L/A, 100 Pine St., Lewiston, offers support to men, according to information supplied by the city. 207-241-7047.

Temperatures are forecast to warm into the 20s and 30s the rest of the week, before dipping into single digits Saturday and Sunday, with wind chills colder than zero.

Editor’s Note:  This story has been updated to indicate the Lewiston Public Library and Lewiston City Hall will not be used as warming centers as previously stated. The library is closed until Jan. 18 due to rising COVID-19 cases.
