LEWISTON — Lewiston earned some valuable Heal points by pulling past Bangor in the third quarter and keeping the distance for a 61-48 boys basketball victory Wednesday at Fern Masse Court.

The Class AA North teams were tied 23-23 at halftime, then the Blue Devils (6-3) outscored the Rams (5-4) 19-9 in the third to take a 10-point lead into the final quarter. The Blue Devils outscored the Rams 38-25 in the second half.

David Omasombo led Lewiston with 18 points and Yusuf Dakane added 17 points. Landon Clark paced Bangor with 15 points.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
BATES’ WARD GARNERS HONOR: Bates College men’s basketball sophomore Stephen Ward was named the co-Rookie of the Week by the Maine Men’s Basketball Coaches and Writers Association, an award that was announced Wednesday.

Ward, in his first NESCAC conference game, recorded the first double-double of his college career in an 81-72 loss to nationally-ranked Wesleyan. Ward scored 16 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in the loss. Bowdoin’s Michael Simonds shared the co-Rookie of the Week honors.

Ward’s Bates teammate Stephon Baxter also caught the attention of the MMBCWA in the loss to Wesleyan. Baxter was named to the MMBCWA Player of the Week Honor Roll after scoring 29 points and adding six rebounds and four assists. Mia Roy of the Bates College women’s team was named Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s Player of the Week earlier this week.

NYA 5, PINGREE 1: Nathanel Peretz notched hat trick and also set up a goal for North Yarmouth Academy (7-4-1) in its win over Pingree at South Hamilton, Mass.

A pair of former Lewiston High School players, Daxton St. Hilaire and Michael Belleau, played key roles for the Panthers. St. Hilaire scored a goal and set up another, and Belleau assisted on two goals.

James Papavasiliou also scored for NYA, and goalie Aidan Farion made 23 saves.
