OXFORD — Officials have yet to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a home late Tuesday afternoon at 170 New Harrison Road.

Two dogs died in the blaze, and the homeowner was brought to the hospital for a medical issue, Oxford Fire Chief Paul Hewey said Wednesday. No firefighters were injured.

The fire was first spotted by someone in Otisfield, who observed black smoke coming from a densely wooded area that was later pinpointed off Yeaton Swamp Road, which runs between Allen Hill Road in Oxford and Gore Road in Otisfield.

Hewey said it took crews a few minutes to find the fire and by the time firefighters arrived at about 4:30 p.m., the one-story wooden structure had burned to the ground.

The house was at the end of a long, narrow dirt road, and the driveway’s icy conditions only permitted one or two trucks at the scene, which made getting water to the house challenging, Hewey said.

The fire was brought under control by 6:50 p.m.

Aiding the Oxford Fire Department were crews from Norway, Paris, Otisfield, Harrison, Casco, Mechanic Falls and Poland.
