Mary Bahn
STRATTON – Mary Smith Kilburn Bahn, 88, of Stratton, formerly of Daytona Beach Shores, Fla, passed away at the home of her daughter, Patty Simpson, on Jan. 30, 2022. Mary was born on Feb. 22, 1933, the youngest of six children to William Homer and LaVar Smith of Deland, Florida. After graduating from Deland High School in 1951, she traveled to Maine, where she met and married James S. Kilburn, her husband of 51 years. In the first 10 to 15 years of their marriage, Jim’s career took them all over the state of Maine, to Florida and to California. In 1965, they returned to North Anson, Maine, where they raised their four children. First and foremost, Mary was a wife and mother, always active in her church and community. She worked in various medical offices, a hospital, nursing home, and was a Tupperware Manager in the ’70s. After they bought a general store in North New Portland in 1975, Mary’s career in municipal government began, including Town Manager, Tax Collector, Town Clerk and Municipal Treasurer. After serving 15 years as Town Clerk/Tax Collector of Carrabassett Valley, she retired in 1998 and the couple moved to New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where she cared for Jim, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Throughout these challenges, she was strengthened by her strong faith in Christ and her participation in church activities. After Jim passed in 2002, she enjoyed her “golfing girls”, walks on the beach, and many church activities. Above all, she was a caregiver, which fulfilled her life desire to be a nurse. After ten years of being a widow, she met William H. Bahn Jr. a classmate from Deland High School, and moved to Daytona Beach Shores. They had almost 10 years together in which they enjoyed traveling and eating out at restaurants.
