100 Years Ago: 1922

An Acadian screech owl, has been presented by W.H. Waterman of East Auburn to Dean F. E Pomeroy, to be mounted for the Stanton bird collection at Bates college. It seems that at the farm where the bird was found, the top rail of a board fence was painted white and the lower ones yellow. Unable to distinguish the white boards, the unfortunate owl flew against them and was immediately killed.

50 Years Ago: 1972

Auburn City Manager Bernard J. Murphy said Thursday the  Auburn Highway Department has been assured that the Auburn Highway Department on Gracelawn Road will be turned over to the city by Feb. 14. Painters are still at work and expected to continue through next week. At present the painting crew is working on the workshop section. As soon as the painters and electricians are done, then the AHD will start moving from the Spring Street Building. Some equipment is expected to be moved next week and the entire shift will be completed by Feb. 18.

25 Years Ago: 1997

The community is invited to be a part of the third annual Winterfest Saturday from 1 to 4 pm. at the Lewiston Armory, Central Avenue. The event is sponsored by the Police Athletic League, Lewiston Recreation Department and the Snowshoe Clubs of Maine. Festivities will start with a parade at 12:30 pm from Kennedy Park to the Armory, led by the snowshoe clubs. At 1 pm snowshoe races, totaling 26, will be held rain or shine. Medals and plaques will be awarded at the Armory after completion of the races, which will be conducted on the grass if there is no snow, or indoors if the weather is inclement. In the armory there will be games for the children, face painting, wave walk, fish pond, along with prizes. Pony rides will be available. Vehicle tours will be given by the fire and police departments. Admission is free, and there will be a small charge for games . Refreshments will be available. Also hosting the event are Lewiston Housing, Spirit of Fire Evangelistic Ministries and the Lewiston High School law enforcement classes.  .
