New Ventures Maine has announced tuition-free online workshops and classes for February that are designed to help people in Maine start a business, build a career and manage money. Classes include:
Making Career Choices: Tuesday, Feb. 1, 10 to 11 a.m. This workshop will help point people in the right direction. It will cover what to consider when making a career choice and the resources available to help people succeed. It will also be offered Feb. 24 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Business Basics: Wednesdays, Feb. 2-16, noon to 1 p.m. This class covers the basics of a business plan, marketing and cash planning. It will help assess the feasibility, desirability and viability of business ideas and get started with a plan.
My Next Career Move: Wednesdays, Feb. 2 to March 9, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Participants will assess skills, interests and experiences and relate them to career options. The class will also identify high-growth, high-wage job fields, as well as low- and no-cost education and training options. The class meets weekly on Zoom for career planning activities and discussion.
My Money Works: Thursdays, Feb. 3 to March 10, 10 to 11 a.m. It’s geared toward gaining skills and confidence needed to stretch money, pay bills, reduce debt, find money for savings, plan for retirement and set personal financial goals with a plan to achieve greater financial stability.
Building Confidence: Thursdays, Feb. 3-17, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Participants, whether navigating recent changes, looking for a job, starting a business or simply wanting to be more confident, will learn to assess their confidence and learn concrete tools to help build it and keep it strong.
Managing Your Money Classes: Thursdays, Feb. 3-17, noon to 1 p.m. Participants will learn to budget, repair their credit and create a savings plan. They may join for one, two or all three classes: Feb. 3, Budgeting Basics; Feb 10. Let’s Talk About Credit; and Feb. 17, Build Your Savings.
Job Search Classes: Wednesdays, Feb. 9-23, noon to 1 p.m. Participants may join for one, two or all three workshops: Feb. 9, Job Search Strategies; Feb. 16, Resume Strategies; and Feb. 23, Interview Strategies.
Introduction to Self-Employment: Thursday, Feb. 10, 6 to 7 p.m. The class covers the pros and cons of owning a business, steps needed for startup, major elements of a business plan and resources to help people succeed.
Tax Readiness for the Self-Employed: Wednesday, Feb. 23, noon to 1 p.m. Learn how to organize financial records, understand tax responsibilities, become familiar with tax forms and file taxes with confidence. The workshop is designed for sole-proprietors.
