DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Heywood Club of Crockett Ridge in Norway would like to thank everyone for their donations to our maintenance/building fund by buying a light for the Lights of Love Christmas tree in front of our building.

With your help, we were able to add a substantial amount to our account. We heard from a lady whose grandmother was a member back in the 1940s and another family who had ties to a camp in the 1930s on Norway Lake down below the club and had fond memories of the area.

We’d like to remind readers the Heywood Club will sponsor our Annual 7 Mile Yard Sale on Saturday, June 11. Anyone with items to donate may call 890-2103.

Ms. Sun Spots, you do such a wonderful job with this column and reach out to a wide sector. Thank you! — Barbara, no town

ANSWER: For those who don’t know, the Heywood Club is the oldest organization in Norway and was started in 1903 by a group of neighborhood ladies who wanted to get together to discuss books and share magazines. It started out as a literary club but has become so much more over the years.

In 1905, the clubhouse was erected and the ladies have been meeting ever since, except for one year during World War II because they were busy on their farms or tending to war-related, and again in 2021 because of the pandemic.

The members have raised money to help families in need, fed those who do not have enough food, provide support for those who are grieving, and have lived by their motto Neighbors Helping Neighbors. They also have a small scholarship fund, a general fund, and a maintenance/building fund.

Organizations such as this exemplify what it means to play a vital part in the  community. The town is very fortunate to have this resource.
