ELLSWORTH – Kimball “Kim” Franklin Martin, 80, passed away Feb. 17, 2022, in Ellsworth at Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital. Kim, born September 13, 1941 in Rumford, was the son of Stuart F. Martin and Estella (Kimball) Martin. Kim spent his childhood in Rumford Point. In the early 1950s, his family built a camp on the south shore of Howard Pond in Hanover, a spot he loved and called home until his departure.
Kim graduated from Stevens High School in 1960. After graduation he attended the University of Maine for a year where he played trombone in the ROTC band. He transferred to Nasson College to finish his college career.
Kim and his dad ran the Ellis River Camp Ground at Rumford Point for several years. Kim enjoyed telling stories of the many happy days meeting his new camper friends. After graduation, Kim worked for Health and Welfare in Portland, then accepted a teaching position in Medway. He moved to Bangor in 1972, teaching at Glenburn Elementary until his retirement in 1990.
Kim and his partner, Gary, spent winters in Florida where he developed an interest in real estate. They loved buying fixer-uppers, rehabbing them and then moving on the next. They spent summers at camp and in 2000, missing “home”, moved to Trenton to settle.
Kim was predeceased by his parents; and brother-in-law, Douglas Smith.
Kim is survived by Gary, his partner of many years; sister, Anne (Martin) Smith; nephew, Brent Bridge (Laurie), niece, Carrie Bridge and nephew, Jeffery Bridge; and his much loved and now grieving Brecky.
As Kim was a very proud, private gentleman and a man of few words, who preferred to stay in the background, per his wishes, there will be no services.
Gifts in Kim’s memory can be sent to Northern Light Maine Coast Hospice,
Northern Light Blue Hill Building Fund or the Alzheimers/Dementia research charity of choice.
