ORONO — Maeve Carroll scored a career-high 32 points on 15-for-17 shooting as the University of Maine women’s basketball team stretched its winning streak to 11 games with a 70-59 win over Maryland Baltimore County on Saturday.
Anne Simon added 17 points for the Black Bears, who improve to 17-10 overall and 14-3 in the America East Conference. Alba Orois added 13 points. UMaine ends the regular season with another game against UMBC on Sunday.
Keelah Dixon had 16 points for Maryland Baltimore County (3-12, 2-12).
ST. JOSEPH’S 78, ALBERTUS MAGNUS 62: Hannah Talon scored 15 points, Jayne Howe had 14, and Grace Philippon added 13 as the third-seeded Monks (22-4) used a 44-25 second half to come from behind and down the second-seeded Falcons (17-9) in a GNAC semifinal in New Haven, Connecticut.
St. Joseph’s will play No. 1 Emmanuel in the championship game on Sunday.
Angelica Hurley chipped in with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Caitlyn Scott had 20 points and five assists for Albertus Magnus.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
MARYLAND BALTIMORE COUNTY 93, MAINE 79: L.J. Owens paced five Retrievers in double figures with 20 points as UMBC (15-13, 10-7 America East) defeated the Black Bears (6-22, 3-14) in Baltimore, Maryland.
Maks Klanjscek scored 17 points, Peter Filipovity had 16 and Kristians Feierbergs finished 11 for Maine.
SMCC 78, NHTI 54: Ian Regan scored 25 points to power the top-seeded Seawolves (19-5, 12-2 YSCC) past the second-seeded Lynx (18-5, 13-1) in the Yankee Small College Conference championship game in South Portland.
Zachary Mickle had 19 points, six assists and five rebounds. Jack Pyzynski and Cameren Cousins added 11 points each. Cousins also had five assists and nine rebounds.
Scott Spann and Donovan Rodriguez scored 13 points apiece for NHTI.
BASEBALL
MAINE SPLITS WITH PENN STATE: The Black Bears (1-5) scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning and went on to beat the Nittany Lions (3-4) in a the first game of a doubleheader in Cary, North Carolina.
Penn State scored four runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to win the second game, 9-3.
In the first game, Scout Knotts hit a two-run triple and Maine scored their other runs on an error and wild pitch in the rally. Knotts and Quinn McDaniel each had two hits for Maine.
In the second game, Josh Spiegel had a two-run double for Penn State.
SOFTBALL
LIBERTY SWEEPS MAINE: Emily Kirby allowed four hits, one walk and struck out six as the Flames (8-6) beat the Black Bears (1-8) in the first game of a doubleheader in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Devyn Howard had four hits in the first game for Liberty. Brianna Neely had two hits for Maine.
In the second game, Caroline Hudson homered, scored twice and drove in two as Liberty won 8-0.
MEN’S HOCKEY
PROVIDENCE 3, MAINE 2: Brett Berard scored in overtime as the Friars (21-13-2, 12-11-1 Hockey East) beat the Black Bears (6-20-4, 4-16-2) in Providence, Rhode Island.
Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Nolan Renwick and Adam Dawe. Berard scored his first goal in the second and Max Crozier scored in the third to tie it for Providence.
Jaxson Stauber made 15 saves for Providence, while Matthew Thiessen had 32 saves for Maine.
UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 4, WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 1: Jared Christy scored three times as the top-seeded Nor’easters (19-3-1) beat the Golden Bears (4-20-2) in a Commonwealth Coast Conference quarterfinal in Biddeford.
UNE advances to face semifinals against a to be determined opponent on Wednesday.
Daniel Winslow also scored for UNE, while Sam Mitchell scored for Western New England.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 4, NICHOLS 3: Jenna Sych scored 9:46 into the third period and the Nor’easters (11-12-2) held on to beat the Bison (16-9-1) in a Commonwealth Coast Conference semifinal in Burrillville, Rhode Island.
UNE advances to the conference championship game on March 5 and will face the winner of the other semifinal between No. 1 Endicott and No. 7 Curry.
The Nor’easters took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Meghan Hamilton and Abbi Charvat. Nichols responded with a goal by Kara Santoro in the first and Isabella Portt in the second. UNE took the lead back with goals by Piper Desorcie and Pych in the third. Santoro added a later goal for the Bisons.
AMHERST 5, BOWDOIN 0: Rylee Glennon scored twice as the Mammoths (13-8-2) beat the Polar Bears (10-11-1) in a NESCAC quarterfinal in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Leslie Schwartz, Kate Pohl and Carley Daly also scored for Amherst.
Dani Marquez had 18 saves for Bowdoin.
COLBY 3, TRINITY 1: The second-seeded Mules (16-4-2) scored three times in the third period to beat the seventh-seeded Bantams (9-13-2) in a NESCAC quarterfinal game in Waterville.
Colby advances to play a to be determined opponent in the semifinals on March 5.
Trinity took a 1-0 lead in the second period on a goal by Paige Kehoe. Colby tied it on a short-handed goal by Tate Senden in the third, then took the lead with a minute left when McKinley Karpa scored. Lexi Cafiero added an insurance goal with 36 seconds remaining.
