Marek Mitens made 43 saves and the Adirondack Thunder got goals from Joe Masonius and Nick Rivera in a 2-1 victory over the Maine Mariners in Glens Falls, New York.
Rivera set up Masonius’ goal with 12 seconds left in the first period, then made it 2-0 with an unassisted tally 5:52 into the second.
Liam Folkes scored Maine’s goal with 8:07 remaining. Mariners goalie Stefanos Lekkas finished with 28 saves.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY: An Olympic gold medal wasn’t on the line this time for Marie-Philip Poulin, who added another clutch goal against the United States by scoring 2:13 into overtime in Canada’s 4-3 win in a “Rivalry Rematch” in Pittsburgh.
FOOTBALL
NFL: The Cleveland Browns agreed to acquire Amari Cooper in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.
The Browns would send a fifth- and sixth-round draft pick in 2022 to Dallas for Cooper, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the teams cannot complete the deal until the new league year begins Wednesday. ESPN was first to report the proposed trade.
SOCCER
PREMIER LEAGUE: Cristiano Ronaldo scored only his second Manchester United hat trick to clinch a 3-2 victory over Tottenham, sending his team fourth in the Premier League.
Ronaldo made an instant impact returning from injury, striking from 25 yards (meters) in the 12th minute in front of retired NFL great Tom Brady at Old Trafford.
• Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah led Liverpool to a 2-0 victory over Brighton, maintaining the attempt to chase down Premier League leader Manchester City.
• In an unprecedented ruling against a club owner, the Premier League ordered Roman Abramovich to stop running Chelsea and sell up after he was sanctioned by the British government over Russia’s war on Ukraine and his close links to President Vladimir Putin.
The league board’s decision to disqualify Abramovich from being a director accelerates the end of the Russian oligarch’s 19 years in control of the reigning world and European champions but the club that transformed into a perennial trophy winner by his investment is allowed to play on.
MLS: Tate Schmitt scored a goal in the third minute of second-half stoppage time, capping a wild comeback by Real Salt Lake in a snowy 3-2 victory over the New England Revolution in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
The Revolution took a 1-0 lead into halftime when Emmanuel Boateng scored in the third minute of first-half stoppage time. Jozy Altidore, who signed with New England as a free agent, entered the game in the 60th minute and scored in the 62nd to push the Revolution’s lead to 2-0.
Sergio Córdova, who signed with RSL on loan from FC Augsburg, cut the deficit in half at the 78-minute mark with his first MLS goal. Justen Glad scored in the 88th minute to knot the score at 2 and set the stage for Schmitt. Jasper Loffelsend assisted on the game-winner.
• Alex Callens scored a goal – the first this season for the defending MLS Cup champions – and New York City FC breezed to a 4-1 victory over CF Montreal in New York.
Santiago Rodriguez added what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 20th minute for NYCFC (1-1-1).
AUTO RACING
XFINITY: Noah Gragson shook off some frustrating finishes over the past few weeks to race to his first victory of the season in a dominant performance in the Xfinity Series at Phoenix Raceway in Avondale, Arizona.
Gragson passed Brandon Jones with 14 laps left and pulled away for his sixth career Xfinity victory. The 23-year-old has had a fast car all year, finishing third at Daytona and second at both Fontana and Las Vegas before breaking through for the victory.
SKIING
WORLD CUP: Mikaela Shiffrin and Petra Vlhová are set for a nerve-wrecking duel for the overall title at the World Cup Finals next week after both missed the podium in the penultimate slalom in Are, Sweden.
Shiffrin will take a 56-point lead over the defending champion from Slovakia into the finals, which features one race in each of the four disciplines.
Shiffrin, who is chasing her fourth overall title, came into the weekend with an advantage of 117 points, but already lost 40 of it on Friday when she finished third in a giant slalom won by Vlhová.
On Saturday, Vlhová was second after the opening run but dropped to fourth, while Shiffrin lost five positions in the final run and finished ninth in the race won by Katharina Liensberger of Austria.
• Olympic champion Marco Odermatt finished runner-up to Henrik Kristoffersen in a men’s World Cup giant slalom in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia to lock up the discipline season title with two races to spare.
GOLF
LPGA: Nanna Koerstz Madsen birdied her last two holes to take a one-shot lead after three rounds in Chonburi, Thailand.
The 55th-ranked Dane’s error-free 6-under 66 gave her a 54-hole total of 21-under 195 in humid conditions after lightning and rain disrupted play for 90 minutes in the afternoon at the Siam Country Club Pattaya Old Course.
Lin Xiyu (66) of China and Celine Boutier (67) of France trail by one stroke.
TENNIS
MIAMI OPEN: Rafael Nadal has become the latest big draw to pull out of the Miami Open.
Nadal is a five-time finalist at the event but hasn’t played in Miami since 2017. His absence means that neither of the winners of this year’s first Grand Slam event will be in the tournament; he won the Australian Open for his record-setting 21st major title, and women’s champion Ashleigh Barty also withdrew earlier this month.
BNP PARIBAS OPEN: Daniil Medvedev defeated Tomas Machac 6-3, 6-2 in Indian Wells, California in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open, the Russian’s first tournament since ascending to No. 1 in the world.
