MONMOUTH – Carlton Desmond Fickett, born to Carlton Scribner and Phyllis Isabelle (Reed) Fickett, on Jan. 28, 1947 in Portland. Carl left us to be with his Lord and Savior on March 13, 2022.
He grew up in Spurrs Corner, Otisfield and attended Casco High School – class of 1965, leaving his senior year to willingly join the U.S. Army, feeling called to serve his country in Vietnam. After honorary discharge, he floundered about life in marriages, employment, post-traumatic stress – trying to make sense of life and war. He later received his high school diploma through Adult Ed at Oxford Hills S.A.D. #17 in South Paris.
Carl worked in many venues, including logging in the woods, but his favorite was driving heavy construction vehicles for Calvin Hunter at CC Construction in Auburn. In January 2010, he met his soulmate, Sally Labree, and his life began to take a new direction. Settling in Monmouth, he spent his last great journey in life falling in “true love”, playing guitar with dear friends, riding horses and 4-wheelers, hunting “upta camp”, traveling and finding a new life in Jesus Christ.
Carl was predeceased by his parents; sisters Shirley Hannaford Labbe, Myrna Menzel, Naida Skillins, Winona and dear brother-in-law, Clayton Polland.
He is survived by one sister, Theva Stevens, of Cobbleskill, N.Y. He had 20 nephews and nieces; five biological children; and countless great-nieces and nephews.
It was his niece, Genise Polland Stern, who stood by his side through thick and thin – a relationship bonded since her birth. He also had a special niece, Naida Jean Stevens, who joined his life in the past decade; the “morning coffee crew” at Phil’s in Monmouth; his faithful high-school classmates; some very dear friends; and his cat “Toot” – all who kept him moving forward.
Genise, Naida and Sally are deeply grateful for the care and support from the Veteran’s Administration at Togus. We also thank the administrative, medical, and nursing team at Sandy River Center in Farmington, and Androscoggin Hospice for caring about his happiness and comfort there.
There will be a celebration of life with his friends in the Monmouth area in the coming weeks. Burial will be held on Sunday, July 17 in the family lot at the Elmwood Cemetery in Otisfield.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dan and Scott’s Cremation and Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Rd., Farmington, ME 04938.
