Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King of Maine are part of a bipartisan group of United States senators planning to visit Poland and Germany this weekend in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine that has forced millions to flee their homeland.

Collins, a Republican, and King, an independent, will be among a group of 10 senators who will meet with U.S. military leaders, German government officials, members of the German Parliament and representatives from humanitarian relief organizations.

Collins and King also are expected to meet with Ukrainian refugees, many of whom have sought refuge in Poland.

Joining King and Collins will be Republican Sens. Joni Ernst of Iowa, Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, John Cornyn of Texas, Steve Daines of Montana, Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran of Kansas, and Democratic Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Jacky Rosen of Nevada.

“This strong, bipartisan delegation proves the Senate stands united in its support for Ukraine,” the senators said in a joint statement Thursday. “During our time in Poland and Germany, we will have the opportunity to gain greater insight on the U.S. and NATO response through engagements with top military leaders.

“We will return with better insight on how Congress can and should continue to support the Ukrainian people and our NATO allies and see firsthand the heartbreaking humanitarian impact of Putin’s war of aggression.”

Representatives for Collins and King said the senators are unable to release further details of the delegation’s visit due to security concerns.

Collins and King both serve on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. King serves on the Senate Committee on Armed Services. He also is a member of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces. Collins is a member of the Subcommittee on Defense.
