To the Editor:
I wanted to express my delight in reading Sara Wright’s essay on lichens. I am an avid lichen lover and receive notifications when a new article is published on lichens. Usually, they are about various diseases or casual gardening blogs that reduce lichens to objects.
I appreciate the author’s love and care, as well as their all-consuming passion for lichen. Thank you so much for sharing such a sprawling web of lichen knowledge and love!
I do have one small note, and that is that I believe the fungal component in lichen has been named the mycobiont, not the microbiont … but perhaps I’m mistaken.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
