SWEDEN — Residents in this Oxford County town will vote on whether to establish a municipal fire department at Saturday’s annual meeting,

It will begin at 9 a.m. at the Town Meeting House at 147 Bridgton Road.

Voters will decide on 51 articles, including an $870,000 budget and a new fire department ordinance.

The proposed ordinance will establish a municipal fire department and defines the duties of the chief and other members.

The town is served by the Sweden Volunteer Fire Association.

Proposed articles related to the fire department budget would increase by $16,455 and fire chief compensation by $1,010. That is a small portion of a nearly 20% proposed increase to the municipal budget.

While the maintenance of roads and roadsides account was cut $51,000 to $50,000; town officials are recommending a $118,000 increase in the capital improvement reserve account for roads. Snow removal and sanding is increasing by $19,000.

New items include $17,000 to establish a capital improvement reserve account for grounds maintenance, upkeep and repairs for town buildings and $8,000 for a generator for the Town Meeting House.

Voters will also elect a selectman, assessor and overseer of the poor for a three-year term. They will also select three Planning Board members, two Appeals Board members and one School Administrative District 72 member and an alternate.
