BANGOR — University of Maine at Farmington took control in the third quarter and held strong in the fourth to secure its first women’s lacrosse win of the season, 15-9, against Husson in a North Atlantic Conference opener Saturday.

The Beavers (1-4, 1-0 NAC) led 5-4 at halftime, then outscored the Eagles (0-4, 0-1 NAC) 7-2 in the third quarter.

Kaya Backman scored all three of her goals in the third to tie for the team-high output. Jade Petrie and Azure Illiano also scored goals in the third and equaled Backman in completing hat tricks. Emma Brown and Abby Trefsger scored two goals apiece for the Beavers and Kristina Mooda and Emily Stinson had a goal each.

Maddy TenKate made seven saves in goal for UMaine-Farmington, while Lewiston grad Emma Begin stopped 13 of 25 shots on goal while manning the Husson goal for the first three quarters. Emily Godfrey made one save in the fourth quarter for the Eagles.

Maddy Benoit and Sophia Gomez scored four goals apiece to pace the Eagles.

MIDDLEBURY 17, BATES 6: Susan Rowley had four goals as the No. 3 nationally ranked Panthers (7-0, 4-0 NESCAC) beat the Bobcats (2-5, 0-4) in Lewiston.

Jane Early added three goals and an assist for Middlebury.

Kate Loughlin had two goals, while Caroline Taggart, Sophie Scola, Jordyn Tveter and Dana Swartz each scored once for Bates. Cammie Lavoie made eight saves for the Bobcats.

COLBY 14, SALISBURY 13 (OT): Annie Eddy’s goal with 20 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the Mules (6-1) over the Seagulls (9-1) in Sparks, Md.

Eddy finished with four goals and two assists for Colby. Gianna Bruno and Ally Franz each chipped in three goals and an assist. Elizabeth Hennessey scored twice. Emily Podgorni had 12 saves.

Salisbury’s Lily Cavallaro, Delaney Hill, Lydia McNulty, Erin Scannell and Leah Vilov all scored two goals.

WESLEYAN 11, BOWDOIN 6: Olivia Lai scored four goals to lead the Cardinals (6-1, 2-1 NESCAC) to a win over the Polar Bears (5-3, 1-3) in Brunswick.

SOUTHERN MAINE 15, SALEM STATE 1: Jennifer Darasz had four goals and an assist as the Huskies (5-3) cruised to a win over the Vikings (2-5) in Gorham.

Rachel Shanks and Kate Colvin each added three goals for USM. Jillian Nichols had a goal and four assists. Lewiston grad Cece Racine stopped one of two shots while playing the first three quarters in goal.

WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 16, U. OF NEW ENGLAND 8: Annabella Arias had three goals as the Golden Bears (7-2, 1-0 CCC) beat the Nor’easters (1-7, 0-1) in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Skyler McComas and Ann Chapman both scored twice for UNE.

ST. JOSEPH’S 17, EMMANUEL 7: Mackenzie Siebert scored five goals as the Monks (9-0, 5-0 GNAC) cruised by the Saints (3-5, 3-3) in Standish.

Carson Battaglia, Lydia Dexter and Megan Mourmouras all netted three goals for St. Joseph’s. Cailyn Wesley had two goals.

Chandra Franca had two goals for Emmanuel.

MIDDLEBURY 14, BATES 9: Finn McCarthy had four goals and an assist as the Panthers (3-3, 1-3 NESCAC) beat the Bobcats (0-7, 0-4) in Middlebury, Vermont.

Russell Thorndike added two goals and an assist for Middlebury.

Jackson Sell scored three goals and Malcolm Klingbell had two for Bates. Jake Johnson, Will Schinabeck, Tyler Chang and Mick Burden each scored one. Spencer Wood stopped 16 of 30 shots on goal.

BOWDOIN 16, WESLEYAN 10: Jason Lach had five goals and one assist as the Polar Bears (7-0, 4-0 NESCAC) beat the Cardinals (5-2, 1-1) in Middletown, Connecticut.

Will Byrne, Zach Chandler, Pat Fitzgerald and Donal Mullane all scored two goals for Bowdoin. Byrne tallied five assists and Mullane had four. Robert Hobbs racked up 18 saves in net.

Justin Hazard had four goals and an assist for Wesleyan.

HAMILTON 7, COLBY 2: Justin Pearl had four goals as the Colonials (4-3, 1-3 NESCAC) beat the Mules (2-3, 1-3) in Waterville.

Jack Haley and Tyler Seidel each added two goals for Norwich.

Max Lacy scored twice for St. Joseph’s. Gray-New Gloucester grad Brannon Gilbert made 10 saves in net for the Monks.

WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 23, U. OF NEW ENGLAND 7: Mike Bannon and Jared Newall scored five goals apiece to lift the Golden Bears (5-3, 1-0 CCC) past the Nor’easters (4-6, 0-1) in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Joseph Bussinelli, Matt Greer and Matthew Quinn each added two goals for Western New England.

Colin Watt had three goals for UNE.

BATES SWEPT BY SPRINGFIELD
GAME 1: SPRINGFIELD 10, BATES 0:
Brendan Kirck and Matthew Robinson combined for a seven-inning no-hitter to down the Bobcats in a doubleheader opener in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Kirck struck out six in five perfect innings, and Robinson worked around two walks while striking out two in the final two innings. Noah Bleakley paced the Springfield offense with three hits and two RBIs.

Brennan Kelley and Henry Jamieson drew walks for Bates to spoil the Pride’s perfect game. Teddie Nelson took the loss on the mound for the Bobcats, allowing five runs (three earned) in four innings.

GAME 2: SPRINGFIELD 6, BATES 5: The Pride (5-10) scored three runs in the first inning and held on against the Bobcats (2-11) to complete the sweep.

Christopher Cimino had two hits for Bates and Ben Gesmondi drove in two runs. The Bobcats used four pitchers, with starter Grant Iuliano allowing four runs (one earned) in two innings and second reliever Ian Tolis suffering the loss after allowing the final Springfield run while pitching the fifth inning.

Cadin Maynard drove in two runs for Springfield, and Jack DeGirolamo (win) and Bleakely (save) combined for 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to close out the game.

UMAINE-FARMINGTON DROPS DOUBLEHEADER
GAME 1: WENTWORTH 13, UMF 3: A five-run third inning put the Leopards in command in the first game of a doubleheader in Weymouth, Massachusetts.

The Beavers cut a 4-0 deficit in half with two runs in the top of the third — both on Riley Bartell’s two-run single — before Wentworth responded in a big way. The Leopards also scored four runs in the fifth.

Oxford Hills grad Hunter LaBossiere led UMaine-Farmington with three hits. Lucas Tuttle took the loss on the mound after getting knocked out in the third with eight earned runs.

Nolan Freeman had two hits and four RBIs, including a two-run home run, for Wentworth, and Brandon Sullivan pitched all seven innings to earn the win.

GAME 2: WENTWORTH 3, UMF 2: The Beavers (0-7) scored two runs in the top of the first but were shut out the rest of the way and couldn’t avoid the sweep at the hands of the Leopards (10-3).

Tyler Lambert singled in Bartell and LaBossiere to put UMaine-Farmington on the board early. In the top of the seventh, LaBossiere and Derek Gendreau singled with one out to put the tying and go-ahead runs on, but Bartell grounded into a game-ending double play.

Wentworth tied the game with two runs in the second and took the lead in the third. Freeman had two of the Leopards’ five hits.

Ky Morris took the loss for UMF, allowing three runs (two earned) in three innings to start the game.

STONY BROOK 6, MAINE 2: Matt Brown-Eir hit a three-run home run as the Seawolves (8-13, 4-1 America East) scored four times in the eighth inning and beat the Black Bears (7-12, 4-1) in Orono.

Brown-Eir was 3 for 5 and Evan Giordano was 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored for Stony Brook.

Jake Rainess was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored for Maine. Jeremiah Jenkins hit a solo home run for the Black Bears. Oxford Hills grad Colton Carson pitched a scoreless ninth inning (no hits, one walk) in relief of starter Caleb Leys (five innings, one earned run) and reliever Noah Lewis (three innings, five earned run).

SOUTHERN MAINE, UMASS DARMOUTH SPLIT: Jason Komulainen hit a two-run double in the sixth inning of the first game of a doubleheader to give the Huskies (4-9) an 8-5 win over the Corsairs (8-7) in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

DJ Perron hit an RBI single in the fourth inning as UMass Dartmouth won the second game, 1-0. Oxford Hills grad Janek Luksza had one of three USM hits.

In the first game, Komulainen and Lewiston grad Jack LeBlond were each 3 for 5 with three RBIs. LeBlond had a two-run home run in the first inning. Cam Seymour scored three times. Lisbon grad Lucas Francis was hit by a pitch to drive in a run in the third, and Luksza scored on Komulainen’s sixth-inning double.

JOHNS HOPKINS 12, COLBY 2: The Blue Jays (10-8) scored four runs in the fourth and six in the sixth on their way to a win over the Mules (9-1) in Lake Myrtle, Florida.

A.J. King was 3 for 4 with five RBI for Johns Hopkins. Charlie Furlong had two hits for Colby.

ST. JOSEPH’S, JOHNSON & WALES SPLIT: Ryan Tessier hit a two-run double in the sixth inning as the Monks (7-7, 1-1 GNAC) scored five runs on their way to a 9-6 win in the first game of a doubleheader against the Wildcats (2-10, 1-1) in Standish.

Johnson & Wales scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning to win the second game, 5-2.

Tessier was 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored in the first game for St. Joseph’s. Ben Gravel added two hits and three RBI.

UMAINE-FARMINGTON DROPS TWO CLOSE GAMES
GAME 1: LASELL 6, UMF 5 (8 INN.): Emily Mestas singled home Katie Hopkins in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Lasers past the Beavers in Newton, Massachusetts.

Olivia Paradis had three hits and three RBIs for University of Maine at Farmington, and Christa Allen also pounded out three hits. Carleigh Schievink took the loss, tossing all 7 1/3 innings, allowing 11 hits and three earned runs while striking out six.

Mestas and Matara Tamzarian each had three hits for Lasell. Eryn Sheeley pitched a complete game for the win.

GAME 2: LASELL 3, UMF 1: Matara Tamzarian had two hits and drove in two runs as the Lasers (5-7) completed the doubleheader sweep.

Taylor Veilleux singled home Kiley Merritt for an unearned Beavers (1-5) run to tie the game 1-1 in the fourth. Leah Stevens led the UMaine-Farmington offense with two hits. Maddie Souza took the loss, pitching 4 2/3 innings before Schievink closed out the game.

MAINE 9, HARTFORD 2: Jasmine Gray hit a two-run home run as Maine scored four times in the fifth inning on its way to a win over Hartford in Hamden, Connecticut.

Gray was 3 for 4 for Maine (8-8) with two RBI and two runs scored. Kelby Drews, who had an RBI single in the fifth, was 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Kya Enos was also 3 for 4 with two runs scored and Grace McGouldrick had two hits and scored twice.

Emily Reid pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out four to earn the win.

Kelsey Galevich hit a solo home run for Hartford (3-19).

MAINE 8, QUINNIPIAC 4: In its second game of the day, Keely Clark hit a two-run single in the fifth inning and Kelby Drews hit a bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning as Maine (4-19) beat Quinnipiac (3-13), 8-4.

HUSSON SWEEPS U. OF NEW ENGLAND: McKenna Smith struck out 13 and allowed two hits as the Eagles (7-5) won the first game of a doubleheader with the Nor’easters (5-9), 4-0, in Biddeford.

Lewiston grad Meagan Gosselin had an RBI double in the first game.

Madelyn Flower and Brianne McCabe each drove in a pair of runs as Husson won the second game, 6-3.

Gray-New Gloucester grad Alie Martell had a pair of hits for UNE in the second game.
