PARIS — Walter Perry has submitted his resignation as selectman, effective Thursday, because he is moving.

Perry, a science teacher at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, was elected last June to a three-year term, defeating two-term incumbent Rusty Brackett.

“My family and I have found a house outside of Paris that is a great opportunity for growth and my wife’s business and home for our future. As a result, I can no longer serve on the Select Board,” Perry wrote in his resignation letter, which was read to the public by Chairman Christopher Summers at Monday’s meeting.

Perry did not attend the meeting.

“It is with regret that the Paris Select Board sees him go,” Summers said.

A special election will be held to fill the remaining two years of Perry’s term. Town officials are hopeful the state will allow a shortened process of qualifying candidates for the ballot so the election can be held during the statewide primary election June 14.

The election for Perry’s seat will be a separate question from the scheduled vote for two selectman seats that are up for election when Summers’ and Peter Kilgore’s terms expire.
